Strange doings in Virginia. George Allen, former governor, one-term senator, son of a famous football coach and in the midst of a heated battle for reelection, has just been outed as a Jew. An odd turn of events, given that his having Jewish origins has nothing to do with anything in the campaign and that Allen himself was oblivious to the fact until his 83-year-old mother revealed to him last month the secret she had kept concealed for 60 years.

U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va., yesterday acknowledged his Jewish ancestry, a day after angrily ducking a question about possible Jewish forebears in a debate with his Democratic challenger.

Allen said in a written statement that his mother, Etty, confirmed he is part Jewish after he read an Aug. 25 article by the Jewish Daily Forward exploring his roots. The article followed the controversy over Allen's alleged racial remark to an Indian-American volunteer for Democrat Jim Webb.

He said in an interview that he was aware of his heritage when asked about it during the nationally televised debate Monday with Webb sponsored by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. Allen did not directly answer a panelist's question on his lineage but sternly criticized her for asking about religion.

Hamas rebuffs Abbas on Israel

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The ruling Hamas party will not join any Palestinian unity government that recognizes Israel, according to a spokesman for Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya.

"There will not be a national unity government if Hamas needs to recognize Israel," political adviser Ahmed Youssef said, according to Hamas sources.

His comments on Friday are in sharp contrast to those of President Mahmoud Abbas, who told the U.N. General Assembly the day before that any future government would recognize the Jewish state and renounce violence.
